Newtel (formerly known as Jersey Cable) was founded in 1998 by Jersey Electricity. It acquired the former Rediffusion (Channel Islands) Limited cable network from British Electric Traction Limited in 1988. The company had invested in a new TV cable network, replacing the Rediffusion overhead cable system with an underground distribution network. ​

In response to demand for an alternative to the incumbent Telecom operators in the Channel Islands, Newtel invested heavily in a fully resilient MPLS network. This enabled Newtel to provide the range of data and voice services that we supply today.
